Calculate Sales Tax and VAT
This sales tax calculator works out the tax on a purchase and the total price, or extracts the tax from a price that already includes it. Enter the amount and the tax rate, then choose whether the amount is before or after tax. The result updates instantly in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Adding tax to a price
To add tax, the calculator multiplies the amount by the tax rate and adds it to the original price. This is the everyday case when you know a pre-tax price and want to know what you will actually pay at the register.
Removing tax from a total
Sometimes you have a final, tax-inclusive price and need the net amount and the tax portion, for example to record a business expense or reclaim VAT. Tick the option to treat the amount as tax-inclusive and the calculator divides out the tax to show the net price and the tax separately.
Sales tax versus VAT
Sales tax, common in the United States, is added once at the final point of sale and varies by state and city. VAT, used in much of the world, is applied at each stage of production but shown to shoppers as a tax-inclusive price. The math here works for both; just enter the rate that applies to you.
This tool is for quick estimates. Always check the exact rate for your location, as rates differ by jurisdiction and product type.
