Converting iPhone HEIC photos to JPG

Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default because the files are roughly half the size of a JPEG of the same quality. Many websites, Windows programs and upload forms still cannot open them. Drop your HEIC photos here, choose JPG and download versions that open everywhere. The first HEIC file loads a decoder of about 1 MB into the page; the photos themselves still never leave your device.

To stop the problem at the source, you can set the iPhone to shoot in JPEG under Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible. Under Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC, the Automatic option also converts photos to JPEG when you copy them to a computer.

Which format to choose

  • JPG works everywhere and is the right choice for photos and for anything a form or older system will open. It has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
  • PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly. Use it for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or a transparent background. Photos saved as PNG are usually several times bigger than the same photo as JPG.
  • WebP makes much smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality and keeps transparency. Every current browser displays it, but some upload forms and older programs do not accept it yet. Safari can open WebP but cannot create it, so the WebP option appears only in browsers that can.

The quality setting

For JPG and WebP, a quality slider controls the trade between size and detail. The default of 92% is visually indistinguishable from the original for nearly all photos. Lower it to 75 or 80% for web pages and email; below about 60%, smooth areas such as sky and skin start to look blotchy.

Things worth knowing

  • Converting from one lossy format to another does not restore quality that was already lost. A heavily compressed JPG saved as PNG gets bigger but not sharper.
  • Animated GIFs convert to a still image of their first frame.
  • Camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied into the converted file, because each image is redrawn before saving.
  • Each file can be up to 30 MB.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Why can I not see the WebP option?

Your browser cannot create WebP files. Safari can display WebP but not save it from a web page. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to convert to WebP.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format, and transparent areas turn white. At the default quality the difference is not visible in photos, but text and sharp graphics are better kept as PNG.
